Age-Appropriate Jiu-Jitsu That Builds Real Character — Not Just Athletic Skill
You want an activity that does more than keep your child busy. You want something that builds confidence, teaches respect, and gives them real tools to handle the world around them. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu does all of that — and at BTT North Dallas, we've built two age-specific programs designed to meet children exactly where they are. From your 4-year-old's first class to your teenager's first tournament, we're with you every step of the way.
Every parent who walks through our door has some version of the same questions. Here's the honest answer to each of them.
BJJ has no striking — no punches, no kicks, no contact to the head. Children learn controlled grappling in a supervised environment where tapping out is always an option and always respected. Our instructors actively manage contact levels and match children with appropriate partners. Many parents are surprised to find our mats are calmer than a soccer field on game day.
Our kids' classes are built around games, movement challenges, and drills that feel like play — because for young children, that's how learning happens. As kids advance, classes take on more structure, but the energy stays fun. Most children who try one class ask to come back before they've even left the building. The belt system gives them constant short-term goals to work toward, which keeps them engaged for years.
This is the question parents ask most, and the answer is yes — but not in the way most people expect. BJJ teaches children how to control a situation physically without throwing punches. More importantly, it builds the kind of calm, grounded confidence that changes how a child carries themselves at school. Bullies look for easy targets. A child who trains BJJ simply doesn't look like one.
We welcome children from age 4 in our Little Axes program. Ages 4-7 train in Little Axes, which focuses on body coordination, listening skills, and foundational movement — the building blocks of Jiu-Jitsu delivered through games and activities. Ages 8-15 join Strong Axes, our more structured kids program where real techniques, sparring, and the belt progression are introduced.
Here's how the experience unfolds from first contact to your child earning their first stripe.
Call (214) 498-7437 or fill out our contact form. We'll match your child to the right program (Little Axes or Strong Axes) and find a class time that works for your schedule. Have them wear comfortable athletic clothing — we provide loaner gis for trial classes.
An instructor will greet your child and introduce them to the mats. Little Axes classes open with warm-up games, then move into basic movement drills and partner activities. Strong Axes classes follow a more structured format: warm-up, technique of the day, drilling with a partner, and a short question-and-answer period. No live sparring on the first day. You can watch from the viewing area the entire time.
Children earn stripes on their current belt as they progress — a tangible, visible sign of their improvement that they earn in front of their peers. For most kids, that stripe ceremony is a moment of real pride. In BTT's kids program, the belt progression runs from white through grey, yellow, orange, and green belts, each representing genuine skill development. Advancement is based on time, attendance, and demonstrated technique — not participation trophies.
By the end of the first month, most children have developed a clear favorite technique, made at least one genuine friendship on the mats, and started asking to go to class on days they don't have to. You'll start seeing changes off the mat too — better focus at school, more confidence in social situations, and an improved ability to handle frustration. That's the real product of kids' Jiu-Jitsu.
BJJ rewards consistency and effort. Children learn to follow instructions, respect their training partners, and work toward long-term goals — skills that transfer directly into school and home life.
Every stripe, every technique learned, every challenge overcome builds real self-assurance. This isn't performative confidence — it's the kind that comes from genuinely earning something hard.
Children learn control-based techniques that stop a physical confrontation without escalating it. They also develop the confident posture and social ease that make them unlikely targets in the first place.
Kids' classes build strength, coordination, balance, and cardiovascular endurance through movement that doesn't feel like exercise. Children who train BJJ regularly develop impressive athleticism that carries over into every sport they play.
Learning technique requires listening carefully and paying attention to detail. Children who train consistently develop better concentration in the classroom — a benefit every parent and teacher notices.
Training partners become some of the closest friendships children form. Learning to work cooperatively, to encourage someone who's struggling, and to lose gracefully are social skills that happen naturally on the mats.
Little Axes (ages 4-7) and Strong Axes (ages 8-15) are not the same class with different-sized students. They are completely different curricula designed around how children at those ages actually learn. A 5-year-old and a 12-year-old need entirely different approaches, and we provide both.
Professor Leonardo Machado holds a 4th Degree Black Belt and 29+ gold medals. Professor Misty is a Pan Champion and American National Champion. Coach Elion Reis brings 15+ years of experience. These are not part-time instructors — they are dedicated black belts who have built careers around developing students of all ages.
Both our Richardson and Irving locations have comfortable viewing areas so you can watch every class. You won't be asked to drop off and leave — you're welcome to stay, watch, and see exactly what your child is learning and how they're growing.
Your child can start in Little Axes at age 4 and continue through Strong Axes into the Adult program at 16. That continuity — same school, same instructors, same community — means the relationships and skills they build compound over time. Many of our strongest adult students started as little kids on these mats.
We welcome children starting at age 4 in our Little Axes program. Ages 4-7 train in Little Axes, where classes focus on listening skills, body coordination, and fun movement games that build the foundation for Jiu-Jitsu. Ages 8-15 join Strong Axes, our more structured program that introduces real techniques and the belt progression system.
If you're unsure whether your 4-year-old is ready, come try a free trial class. Some children are ready at 4, others do better starting at 5 or 6. We'll give you an honest assessment after seeing your child on the mats.
Yes. BJJ has no striking — no punching, no kicking, no head contact. Children learn controlled grappling in a supervised environment where tapping out is always an option and always respected immediately. Our instructors actively manage contact intensity and match children with appropriate partners.
BJJ also teaches children how to fall safely, which is one of the most valuable physical skills a child can develop for life outside the gym too. Minor bumps and bruises happen as in any sport, but serious injuries are uncommon in a properly supervised kids' program.
Comfortable athletic clothing — shorts or leggings and a t-shirt. We provide loaner gis (the traditional BJJ uniform) for trial classes, so no need to purchase anything before you decide to enroll. Bring a water bottle. Training is done barefoot on the mats, so no shoes needed once they step on the mat. Tie back long hair.
Once your child enrolls, they'll need their own gi. We can point you toward the right size and where to get one — it's not complicated or expensive.
Two to three classes per week is the sweet spot for most kids. That's enough frequency to build real skill and advance through the belt system without adding stress to already-full family schedules. Once a week works for children who are just starting out or balancing multiple activities.
We offer classes at both our Richardson and Irving locations with morning, after-school, and evening options. You'll be able to find a schedule that fits without rearranging your life.
Yes. Both locations have viewing areas where parents are welcome to watch every class. We encourage parents to watch, especially in the early months — seeing your child's progress firsthand is one of the most rewarding parts of enrolling them in BJJ.
For very young children (ages 4-5), we occasionally ask parents to observe from the viewing area rather than the mat edge, as children at that age sometimes have trouble focusing on the instructor when a parent is in their line of sight. It's not a rule — it's a suggestion that helps your child get more out of class.
Competition is completely optional and never required. For children who want to compete, there are local and regional tournaments throughout the year that are specifically organized for youth BJJ. Many kids find competition to be an incredible confidence-building experience — win or lose.
For children who have no interest in competing, that is completely fine. Everything they need to grow and advance is available entirely within regular classes. Competition is a path, not a requirement.
No obligation, no pressure. Bring your child in for one class and see how they respond. We think you'll both be surprised by how quickly they take to it.
