Everything You Need to Know About Training at BTT North Dallas

We understand that starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can bring up many questions. Below are answers to the most common questions we receive from new students and parents. If you don't find what you're looking for, please don't hesitate to contact us.

No experience is required. Most of our students start with zero martial arts background. Our Beginners and Essentials classes are specifically designed for newcomers to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Our instructors break down techniques step-by-step and create a welcoming environment where beginners feel comfortable learning at their own pace. Everyone at BTT North Dallas remembers what it was like to be a beginner, and our community is supportive and encouraging to new students.

For your first class, wear comfortable athletic clothing such as a t-shirt and athletic shorts or leggings. Avoid clothing with zippers, buttons, or anything that could snag or cause injury.

We provide loaner gis (the traditional BJJ uniform) for new students to try during their trial period. No shoes are worn on the mat—training is done barefoot. After you join, you'll want to purchase your own gi, and we can help you find the right size and style in our pro shop.

Children can start training in our Little Axes program at age 4. This program is specifically designed for ages 4-7 and focuses on coordination, basic movements, and character development through fun, age-appropriate activities.

At age 8, students transition to our Strong Axes program (ages 8-15), which offers more structured technical training, live sparring, and competition opportunities. Both programs are taught by instructors experienced in working with children and creating a positive, safe learning environment.

Gi training uses the traditional kimono uniform, allowing for grips on the clothing and emphasizing more technical, methodical techniques. The gi provides additional control points and slows down the pace, making it ideal for learning details and fundamentals.

No-Gi training is done in athletic wear (rashguard and shorts) and tends to be faster-paced with more wrestling-oriented techniques. Without the gi grips, practitioners rely more on body positioning and control.

Both styles complement each other and develop different aspects of your grappling game. We recommend training both to become a well-rounded practitioner. Many students find that skills learned in one style directly improve their performance in the other.

Yes. Safety is our top priority. Our kids programs use age-appropriate techniques and controlled training methods. Children learn how to fall safely, practice techniques with cooperative partners, and are always supervised by experienced instructors.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is widely considered one of the safest martial arts for children because it emphasizes technique and control over striking. There is no punching or kicking in BJJ—students learn to control opponents through grappling, which significantly reduces the risk of injury.

We maintain small class sizes to ensure proper supervision, and our instructors are trained to create a safe, positive learning environment for children of all ages.
